2024:
A Year of Creativity and Connection
Dear Sew Dandelions Family,
As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible journey we’ve had together in 2024. From our slow, first few stitches of January to the bold creations of October, November and December, you’ve filled this year with inspiration, hard work, and so much joy.
To celebrate, I wanted to share something a little different—answers to some of the most fun and curious questions I’ve been asked by students and fellow creatives throughout the year. Think of it as a little “end-of-year interview” with me, and also most of our projects that were worked on and finished this year by you.
I’m so proud of you all!
Who influences you on social media?
Denise Boomkens, without a doubt. She’s a digital creator and the author of The Art of Aging Unapologetically. As I’ve entered my 50s this year, she has been a source of encouragement and inspiration. Although, I was “first” with my signature BIG glasses. Ha!
Dream guest for your dinner party?
Oprah! She’s iconic, multi-faceted, and deeply inspiring. What can be said about Oprah that hasn’t already been said? She’s a powerhouse of wisdom, empathy, and unparalleled storytelling. From her early days on The Oprah Winfrey Show to her work as a producer, author, and advocate, she’s always been about empowering others. Imagine the conversations at the table! Plus, I’m convinced she’d bring the best dessert and leave us all with life-changing advice before dessert forks even hit the table. Plus, there would be gifts under each chair… for everyone!
Also, Martha Stewart. Love me some Martha!
Ironically, my husband and I have always joked about inviting James Spader to Thanksgiving. Right?! Once, we even convinced friends he was coming! I briefly met him at ABC Carpet and Home in NYC—he seemed lovely, but alas, he has yet to RSVP.
Best month to visit Sweden?
You’ve got two magical options: mid-December, for the serene beauty of St. Lucia Day, or June/July, when everything is alive and green for midsummer celebrations and dancing around the midsummer pole.
What did 2024 bring you?
Forgiveness and personal growth. Oh, and how to properly refurbish mid-century-modern furniture, like a pro.
Do you make your own clothes?
I used to make nearly everything in my teens and 20s. These days, I focus on special occasion pieces. It’s mostly like one piece a year. My most recent creation? My 50th birthday dress—affectionately nicknamed “the duvet tent”. It is THE MOST comfortable dress I have ever owned.
Did you make your kids’ clothes?
Only their christening gowns and Halloween costumes until about age 6 or 7. If they’d been girls, I probably would’ve made more. I like dresses, I’m a girl-y girl.
Do you get bored while driving to lessons?
Never! This year, I’ve read and listened to 21 books (with two currently in progress). Driving is my “story time”—sometimes I even park somewhere ahead of my lesson, just to finish a chapter.
What’s your hobby?
Restoring mid-century-modern furniture. It’s deeply satisfying work, whether I’m refinishing a walnut dining table, reupholstering 70s lounge chairs, or rebuilding Cesca chairs to suit my vision.
What’s next for Sew Dandelions?
I dream of opening a dedicated space where we can host group classes, creative workshops, camps, and interdisciplinary arts collaborations. I’m exploring options now, and I hope to make this a reality in 2025.
Sincerely, thank you all for being part of Sew Dandelions this year. Your creativity, curiosity, and commitment inspire me daily, and I can’t wait to see what we create together in the year ahead.
Wishing you a peaceful, healthy, and a beautiful new year.
Thanks for being here!
I’m Dominique, and I empower aspiring designers and makers to bring their creative visions to life while experiencing the joy of hands-on learning. Together, we focus on mastering what you love and turning your ideas into reality.
