A Step-by-Step Sewing Curriculum
Unlike one-time craft workshops, our sewing program follows a thoughtfully designed progression. Each class introduces new techniques while reinforcing previous skills, giving students the confidence to create increasingly sophisticated projects. By the end of the series, they'll have built a strong foundation in sewing—and be ready to explore garment construction and fashion design.

Most students have never touched a sewing machine before. We teach everything step by step in small groups, so every child receives plenty of individual attention.

Sewing Introduction - a prerequisite
Learn the basics of a sewing machine. Sew a muslin sewing sample with seam joining.
You’ll learn:
Sewing machine safety and basic operation
How to thread and control the machine
Straight stitching and turning corners
Confidence using professional sewing equipment
You’ll leave with a simple, but valuable sewing project, sewn and finished by you.

Choose the schedule that works best for you:
Option 1: Two 60-minute classes over two consecutive weeks.
Option 2: One 90-minute class completed in a single day, with a short draping and movement break in the middle. Many families prefer the one-day option for convenience.
Vibe: Super foundational. Total beginner.
Students will “master” the absolute basics: threading, starting, stopping, and sewing a simple, clean seam while building the muscle memory they’ll need to conquer bigger projects ahead.

Welcome to the world of sewing! This introductory class is designed for children who have never used a sewing machine before. In a relaxed, encouraging environment, students will learn the fundamentals of sewing while making a simple project they can proudly take home.
We'll cover how to safely operate a sewing machine, sew straight lines and corners, understand basic sewing tools, and build confidence at every step. No prior experience is needed, and all materials are included.
By the end of class, your child will have the skills and confidence needed to continue into Kids Sewing 1, where they'll begin creating larger and more exciting projects.

Step into your second creative uprising.
Now that your child knows the basics, it's time to create their first functional project. Students will sew a sturdy tote bag while learning the importance of accurate cutting, seam allowances, pressing, and professional construction techniques.
This class builds confidence and introduces many of the core skills used in future sewing projects.

Sewing 2: Pillow Case
You’ll learn:
Measuring and cutting fabric accurately
Sewing long continuous seams
Finishing raw edges neatly
Precision pressing
Improving sewing accuracy
And leave with your very own pillowcase, sewn by you

Students will continue and expand their sewing machine knowledge in threading and in addition to sewing simple, clean seams, will practice top stitching, and creating crisp edges that withstand daily use.
By the end of Sewing 2, students take home a functional pillowcase. It’s proof they can shape fabric into real-world comfort. They’ll be primed to tackle wearable projects in Sewing 3.

Sewing 3: Shorts
You’ll learn:
Reading a simple sewing pattern
Sewing curved seams
Constructing a garment
Creating an elastic waistband
Professional finishing techniques
And leave with your very own pair of shorts, sewn by you

Sewing 3 is the ultimate beginner crescendo.
Sewers will assemble pieces into their first wearable garment: elastic-waist shorts.
They’ll try out working from a pattern, adjust pattern to their measurements, sewing slight curves, join complex seams, and install waistbands - stepping fully into the world of clothing creation.
At the end of Sewing 3, each student walks away in shorts they made themselves and the boldness to enter Sewing 4

Construction & Design Lab For Kids
Fashion Studies | Ages 8–13

The Construction & Design Lab is the highest level of study within the Sew Dandelions youngest sewer/designer program.
Students move beyond project-based sewing into fashion-focused training, and are expected to think critically.

Students in this lab are expected to think through (age-appropriate) construction problems, experiment with solutions, and work with increasing independence.

Fashion Studio For Kids: Where Design Meets Entrepreneurship

How it works
Ages 8–13
Maximum 5 students
90-minute classes
Register in 4-week sessions
Re-register every four weeks to continue existing project or develop new projects
Class WILL run with just one student.
4-week consecutive sessions offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The Construction & Design Lab for kids is the highest level of technical study within the Sew Dandelions youngest sewer/designer program, as of spring/summer 2026.
Students move beyond project-based sewing into fashion-focused training that reflects the early foundations of design education at higher institutions.
Curriculum Includes:
Garment construction
Seam finishes & closures
Structural shaping (darts, bias, fit logic)
Introductory draping techniques
Fashion illustration as design communication
Production concepts: sampling, revisions, workflow
Students are expected to work independently (with supervision) and think critically.
Each 90-minute session includes:
• 45-60 minutes of technical instruction
• 30-45 minutes of studio development (project) -
The Construction & Design Lab: ‘Fashion Studio’ is reserved for beginner + / intermediate-level students, ages 8-13, who have completed the Sew Dandelions foundational sewing sequence, and have surpassed 20 hours of supervised sewing.
Students are comfortable using a sewing machine and ready to work more independently. Before enrolling, students should have completed:
An additional 6 hours of sewing instruction (or equivalent sewing experience)
Fashion Illustration AND/OR Summer Fashion Camp, which provides the design foundation used throughout this program
Students who meet these prerequisites will be able to spend their studio time designing, problem-solving, and developing their technical sewing skills, rather than learning basic machine operation.
At this level, it is recommended that students have access to a sewing machine at home and a workspace where they can work with fabric between classes.

There are no identical projects here. Ever.
One student may be creating a Victorian-inspired tunic while another is developing a handbag collection, draping a dress, or perfecting invisible zippers. Everyone learns together, but every designer follows their own creative path.
A fashion studio for young designers who love to create.
This ongoing program is designed for children who want to explore fashion design and garment construction in a professional studio environment. Instead of everyone making the same project, each designer develops their own ideas, learns new techniques, and progresses at their own pace.
Students begin to understand how designers develop ideas, build samples, and move a design from concept to finished garment.
Occasional conversations with working designers and industry professionals may also be incorporated, offering students a glimpse into the broader fashion world.
This program is not about perfection. Students will not leave as tailors, illustrators, or master drapers. These are foundational steps—skills and ideas that take years to refine. The goal is to introduce the discipline, language, and creative thinking that form the long-term practice of fashion design and creativity.
The goal isn't to finish a prescribed project—it's to think like a designer from concept to end product, and to work shoulder to shoulder with other young designers.

Working in a small group of just five students, children sketch collections, build mood boards, drape on mannequins, experiment with fabrics, design accessories, learn sewing techniques, and construct original garments. Every project is unique.
Designers get to sew, drape, millinery, textiles, embroidery, accessories, or even make concept shoe prototypes—without feeling constrained. We encourage to venture outside of the box.
Inspired by a Montessori-style approach, students are trusted to make creative decisions, solve problems independently, and build technical skills through hands-on exploration. Finished projects aren't limited by a class schedule—unfinished work can simply continue during a future session.
It’s not the project that’s important, it’s the journey from start to finish.

Yes. Drop-off is absolutely fine. Please be prompt for pick-up.

Yes. You’re welcome to relax in our Parlor while class is in session.
If you’d prefer to sew alongside your child, you can also book a private two-person session and participate together. Yay!

A water bottle. They always ask for water. No food during sewing sessions, however. Water is allowed in a closed water bottle.
If they have a favorite pair of scissors or a personal sewing kit they love, they’re welcome to bring it — but it’s not required.

No. We are a fully stocked studio with machines and tools ready to go.
If your child has a machine they’d like to learn on, they may bring it. We’ll help them set it up properly.

No. We have a large assortment of fun, kid-friendly fabrics available.
If they’re working on something very specific and want to bring their own fabric, that’s welcome too.

If a group class runs with just one student, they receive a private lesson for the group rate. Win-win.
The owner is the instructor. Always. Your child is in experienced hands.

For safety.
We may lock the building entry door or the studio door if we are not expecting additional arrivals. When younger children are in session, we sometimes secure the building so they can move to the bathroom alone. Bathrooms are located in the hallway of the building.
If the door is locked, simply ring the doorbell by the parking lot entrance or the studio door inside the building. It’s quick, easy, and ensures your child’s safety.
Your child’s safety and comfort are our priority. Classes are small, structured, and led by the studio owner, Dominique.
Entry doors may be secured during sessions, and students are supervised at all times.
