Seams just about right.

Gertrude: Why seams it so particular with thee?

Hamlet: “Seams”, Madam? Nay, it is; I know not “seams”.

If Hamlet could spare some time and take a lesson on techniques how to sew together and finish seams for projects and garments, perhaps his life would not unravel.

Alas.

INTRO TO: SEAMS

The function of a seam or seams is to hold pieces of fabric together and to manipulate fabrics into shape by darts and curves.

Why is it necessary to know multiple seams? Why can’t I just cut the fabric, sew the straight seam and call it a day? The seam allowance is inside, so why bother?

Knowledge about different techniques will help you understand how to put together and how to finish a project. Seams of a project depend on the type of fabrics you use. Light weight and delicate fabrics will need delicate seams with smaller needles, where the seam allowance will be smaller or completely hidden like a French seam. Heavier fabrics may require heftier sewing needles and the seam allowance will be wider.

Edges of most fabrics fray. If they are not finished in a proper fashion, omitting a step like that, can cost you the whole project, or will just look sloppy and will bother you to no end. It’s good to know the basics from the beginning.

Hope to see you in class INTRO TO: SEAMS
